Lesson 2:

Jesus

WHO IS JESUS?

Jesus is God himself reincarnated as a human being, who sacrificed Himself so that we could live with God forever. The bible tells us that Jesus is part of the Holy Trinity, and is both fully human, and fully God. Now this may seem like a hard concept to grasp, and it is honestly something that we may never truly understand. Jesus’ father is God, and his mother is Mary. Since Jesus was the son of God, he was born perfect. Throughout his life he never sinned, and continued to live

This is a question that many people ask. Even Jesus asks his disciples “who do you say that I am?” To start answering this question, lets start by answering basic questions we would ask about anyone! First off his name is Jesus which means “to deliver, save, or rescue.” Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and was born to Mary and Joseph. Although mary and Joseph were Jesus’ earthly parents, His true father was God. He was born into a poor family, and was most likely trained to be a carpenter like his dad. Jesus grew up in Nazareth, and had brothers and sisters. Jesus also loved to be in the temple, and would ask the teachers questions. Jesus fully committed to his ministry when he was about 30 years old. He talked with everyone, and was a man of honesty and love. People would crowd around him and listen to him speak for hours, some even travelling days to hear him speak. Jesus performed miracles for the people, and uplifted those who were pushed to the side and left out. At the end of Jesus’ ministry, he was arrested, beaten, and killed, but he did so on our behalf. 3 days after he was killed, Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven, and one day he will return.

There is so much more in the bible that will give you an even greater understanding of who Jesus was, and what he was like. The book of John is my personal favourite, and is one that might particularly give you a better understanding of what Jesus was like.

WHY IS JESUS IMPORTANT?

Although there is so much to talk about when it comes to Jesus, I want to lay out some basics for you to get started on.

  1. Jesus is part of the trinity. This is a hard concept to grasp, and to be honest, we may not understand how it truly works in this life. Jesus is fully God, but also fully human. Now you are wondering, “how does that work?” so I will hopefully explain it to you to help you understand. Jesus was fully human in the sense that he experienced human struggles. He got hungry, sad, mad, and even probably stubbed his toes (although we have no biblical evidence of this). Even though he was fully human, he was also fully God, meaning he lived life perfectly. He never sinned, and held such a close relationship with God that they were one. I know this still does not make a lot of sense, so I encourage you to read and research what it means to be fully man and fully God. Jesus is important because he is God!

  2. Jesus Died for you. Jesus is important because he died for you. In order for you to fully understand why it matters, I need to give you some history, so stick with me. When Adam and Eve sinned, they could not be in Gods presence any longer since they had disobeyed him. Sin stops us from receiving the fullness of God that he gives to us. In order to repay the sin that was committed, the Isrealites had to sacrifice animals. The cost of sin is death, so animals would die to pay the penalty that we deserve. When Jesus came and died, he took all the sin in the world, and died on behalf of our sin. Meaning that when we sin we do not have to pay the penatly of that sin, as long as we believe in Jesus, and repent (or apologize) for the sin we committed. I know that was a lot, and it will make more sense as you continue reading the bible, but Jesus paid the ultimate price for us. His sacrifice made a way for us to be in relationship with God personally once again. He loved us so much that he would take our punishment of death, in order for us to live with God forever.

  3. Jesus will come back one day. Luckily for us, Jesus did not stay dead. 3 days after he was kiled he rose again. He defeated death and ascended to heaven to sit at the right hand of God. One day Jesus will return! Jesus will come down from heaven to establish his rule as king of kings, and will destroy evil once and for all. This is important because we must carry out Gods mission until he comes back. Jesus told us to go and make disciples, meaning spread the word of God! Now we continue to spread Gods love in anticipation of his return.

Verses for you to reflect on:
John 14:6 - Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

John 11:25 - Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even though they die;"

John 8:12 - When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
